The 2012 Oscars - A Recap

Although I (we) weren't going to do this, I'm bored tonight and decided to cover the Oscars.  As always, there's a mix of red carpet and show coverage and if you text or tweet me, you're fair game for a shout out.

The Red Carpet

It's rather bizzario that they keep reporters behind some sort of hedge/rope for this event.  What do they expect? That Ryan Seacrest is going to jump out and start chasing someone down the red carpet (I guess that is technically plausible).

Terri: How does Ryan know what every girl has ever worn at every awards show?

Dana: It seems he knows every aspect of the entertainment industry.  Perhaps he can just upload all of his knowledge into the hard drive brains of all his clones?

George Clooney's lady friend looks really pretty.  And she is SO tall.

Viola Davis looks very pretty in her emerald dress.

Michelle Williams always looks good.  She's come a long way from her days on Dawson's Creek.

Sasha Baraon Cohen is there in Character.  I'm really not feeling this, I feel it's a little stupid.  Good publiclity for a new movie for sure, but I mean - why would you want to be at this bs? I feel its very childish.

Terri: Amy Jeurgens (Shailene Woodley) at the Oscars? This is surreal.

Dana: Yeah, whoever would have thought this day would happen?  What next, Kstew is winning a best actress award at the Oscars?

OMG! Sasha Baron Cohen just spilled some dust/ash ALL OVER Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet.  He had some sort of urn thing with him and he dumped the entire thing over Ryan's suit.  He looked super shocked and then guards came to pull Cohen away.  This was probably the most shocking moment of the night.

At least Ryan is a good sport about it all. Everyone keeps trying to clean him off.  He apparently whipped out a second coat that he had with him.  Is anyone surprised by this?

The Show

Billy Crystal is hosting for the 9th time.  The video opening is pretty entertaining, it has some cameos by George Clooney, Tom Cruise and even Justin Bieber.  His cold opening is decent.  It's safe and mildly entertaining.  Much like the Oscars themselves.  The sound seems off though, and it's annoying.

The first award - Hugo wins best Cinematography and Set Decoration and I don't care.  However, I hope I see a props award - being friends with Miz Jenn Brown has given me a new appreciation of this line of work.

I feel like Hugo and The Artist are going to be the big winners of this thing.

Don't put Titanic in the same montage as Twilight! As we've already established Jack & Rose > Edward and Bella.

Jlo and Cameron Diaz are presenting together.  Somewhere, Diana Fisher is very happy.

There's NO WAY the makeup in "The Iron Lady" is better than in Harry Potter.

Yay Octavia Spencer!

Tina Fey and Bradley Cooper are an odd presenting choice, but Tina looks fabulous.  Bradley, not so much - he needs to lose the mustache.  I really think that Tina Fey needs to host one of these things sometime, she would do an amazing job.

Muppet's/other animated characters 'presenting at award shows' are a major peeve of mine.  So annoying.

Cirque du Soleil at the Oscars? Interessant.

There's no doubt that all these performers are talented.  However, this gives me flashbacks to me and Shane being in Las Vegas.  We went to see the Ka production.  About half way through the movie, I leaned over to him and was like "Shane, I don''t really get this".  His response was "Ugh, Terri... you're right, I don't get it either".

This Robert Downey Jr. & Gwyneth Patrow bit is very annoying.  Much like this entire telecast.

Why is Chris Rock getting such big applause? Did we not forget he's one of the most annoying people alive.

Ben Stiller and Emma Stone may be my favorite presenting duo thus far.  Though I think Mr. Ben has had one spray tan too many, he's looking awfully orange.  I'm not even sure what award they're presenting, but Hugo is nominated, so I guess that's going to win. (I was right).

I was just about to make a snarky comment about Christopher Plummer winning an award - but they said he's the oldest actor ever to win an Oscar AND he played a gay man who stayed closeted nearly his entire life.  Consider me charmed.

That damn Titanic song makes me want to cry ever, single time.  I am so going to see this 3D rendition, even though I'm not the biggest fan of 3D.

Angelina Jolie.  Yawn.

Best Director - Martin Scorcese is without a doubt going to win this.  I really don't know why I'm still watching, I know this is turning into quite a shitty recap - I do apologize. Oh. I was actually wrong on this one.  The director from The Artist won.

I was going to be annoyed that Meryl Streep won best actress (again) but her acceptance speech made me change my mind.  She was the most entertaining and gracious winner of the night.

Best Movie - The Artist (and I'm basically asleep now).

That's a wrap on tonight.  I promise I'll be in better form for the next awards show.  Here is our final (abysmal) tally of predictions:  Terri = 4/10 & Dana - 3/10.  Oh well, the Teen Choice awards are coming up.  I'm sure that will up our prediction stats a bit.
