Teen Choice Awards 2012 - Predictions
It's that time of year again - time for the Teen Choice Awards. Sad as it, we are always a little pumped for this - just based on the fact that they are 100% teen voted and thus we can usually get a greater number of predictions correct. Dilemmas in this year's voting included things such as "Twilight vs. Hunger Games - which is most teen loved?" and "Damon vs. Stefan Salvatore - which one will they think is hotter?" Who did we pick? Please read ahead...
Billboard Music Awards - A Brief Recap
Since I was at a cabin (well, vacation house) in Port Blandford last night, I did not get a chance to recap this awards show. However, never fear, I found a torrent to download the show, and am going to do a brief recapping. Enjoy!
A performance by LMFAO. I can appreciate these guys, they've made a career out of mediocre talent and a lot of ridiculousness. I get behind this, and wish I could do the same. They're entertaining and fun. A solid opener.
So, Claire & Phil Dunphy from Modern Family (aka Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen) are hosting this thing. This seems like a... completely weird choice. They're not involved in the music industry at all. I get that the show is airing on ABC and I love these guys, but still. This is awkward. But Ty is wearing a plaid shirt with a bow tie. I'm down with that.
WTF Blue suited Usher. What we're you thinking?
Oh hello Mike Fisher sitting in the audience. I guess you're free to attend these things seeing as how your team is out of the playoffs. Did I mention the fact that your team totally screwed me over for all my hockey pools?! Nashville, I had faith in you this year that I won't next. However, Mike, you are hot.
I think Julianne Hough is catching the Seacrest disease where she is everywhere at all times. And she's wearing the equivalent of a sparkly towel. And her microphone didn't work for literally about a minute and she didn't even notice. Embarrassing. Justin Bieber just won. No one is surprised.
Lisa Marie Presley, you do not look quite as creepy as your mom. Yet.
Katy Perry just won something and brought her nan (sorry "Grandma") with her. I'd do something like that too, so props Katy.
No doubt Kelly Clarkson is a great singer, but I'd like to see her change from the emo-ballads every once and a while. Something where she could actually move around a bit and not just stand there with her microphone would be great.
Ohh Boyband time! It's "The Wanted" - I've actually been telling my friends lately how I am very happy with the return of the boyband. Every 13 year old girl needs that band to stick on their walls that they will be slightly ashamed of in 10 years time (ahem... Nsync & Soul Decision).
Miley my ducky, you forgot to wear pants with that suit jacket.
Ugh. Chris Brown. Imma skip right through to the next song. When are we going to stop pretending that he's legit?
They cut Natasha Bedingfield off half way through her Donna Summers tribute. That's a little rude.
Tribute to Taylor Swift - is she not a little young to be getting tributes yet?
Cut back to Mike Fisher, sitting alone. Carrie must be performing at some point. He looks hilariously awkward.
Usher also bores me lately. At least he's changed out of that god awful blue suit. I'm giving this performance one minute to catch my attention before it gets skipped. And, skipped.
I'm guessing that Adele couldn't make this event, because I already know she won 12 awards and I suspect she would have made an appearance by now.
Alright faithful and loyal blog readers, it's confession time. I love the new Justin Bieber song. In a way that I know I'm shamefully going to be blasting it in my car all summer. This past long weekend, it was stuck in mine, Diana's and Dana's heads basically on constant loop. Oh Biebs, you win this round.
Now, Biebs new find, Carly Rae Jepsen is performing. I gave her a quick wikipedia-ing to learn a little more and learned that she is WAY older than what I though. She's turning 27 this year. This changes everything. First I thought he song was a cute little love song by a 16 year old girl. Meanwhile, she's nearly 30. WTH.
Mike cam - still sitting alone, still looking bored to death. He has become the best thing about this award show, Maybe he's so sad because he has visions of non existent Stanley Cups dancing through his head?
Oh, we finally have the Carrie Underwood performance. I probably won't watch all this, as well, I don't really like country music, and from what I've heard, most of her music sounds kind of the same. God, me/Diana/Dana would never be able to sing along to this - her key is TOO high. We are a trio that often fights over the man singing parts of a song.
Male Artist of the year goes to Lil Wayne? Over Justin Bieber and Bruno Mars? C'est bizzare.
Linkin Park is still around? This surprises me.
I am still baffled that people cheer for Chris Brown and he wins things. I'm going to stop writing about him, period.
I like Katy Perry much more when she's upbeat. She looks super awkward on this swing thing that she is descending to the stage from. Oh, you're going to stay in that the whole time? Cool.
Mike cam - he now has seat company and now looks moderately more entertained. Still probably daydreaming about checking various performers into imaginary boards.
Whoopie Goldberg? Oh, a Whitney Houston tribute, that makes sense then. John Legend is now performing, I never thought much about him until I started following his fiance on twitter and I love her. She routinely tells off people who piss her off and it's extremely entertaining.
Cee-lo is really weird, and so is this performance, but I can't stop watching.
Taio Cruz is British. This, I did not know.
Nelly Furtado is singing a song called "Big Hoops". Ugh, I've heard this on the radio and I HATE it. Also, Nelly I haven't seen you in a while, you've hmm, how to put this nicely, become curvier. Like, a lot curvier.
Mike cam - he's smiling AND clapping for Alicia Keys. Maybe he likes her. Or he's pretending that she's a goalie net and he's just scored in over time.
Stevie Wonder has been performing for a long time. I get that he's iconic and all, but I'm bored, and this is nearly over. Next.
Tis over. It was semi-entertaining show, but a little dull to watch on my own. The final tally with regard to predictions is as follows: Me: 18/45 Dana: 22/45. It's not a pass from either of us, so hopefully the MTV Awards can help us out. Check back tomorrow when we give a full run down of the Teen Choice Awards predictions. Bon Nuit!

Analysis of New Fall Shows - ABC Edition
I, Terri, have a not-so-secret confession to make. I am a television nerd. From a young age, I had a tv watching schedule tacked to my bulletin board, I knew about and understood how the Neilsen rating system worked. Although not as bad as I used to be (thanks to the invent of streaming and downloading), I am finally starting to accept my nerdism.
Based on my years of tv watching experience, over the next few days I am going to review trailers for new series starting this fall. Basically, it's just going to be a run down of new offerings (by network) and whether or not I think they are going to succeed or fail. You should trust me, I am obviously an expert ;)
Up first - ABC
666 Park Avenue
My First thoughts after watching the above trailer were 'meh'. It's seems like ABC is going for some kind of cross hybrid of Once Upon a Time and American Horror Story on this one. The basic premise appears to be - people move into a hotel, the hotel is full of supernatural characters, chaos ensues. While it might attract some people for the first couple of weeks, I don't think this has the staying power to last more than one season.
Nashville
This aptly named series is about an aging country singer who is forced to go on tour with an up and coming young star in order to stay relevant, drama ensures, country music is prevalent, tears are shed. It looks soapy and over produced and I think that middle America will probably love it.
Last Resort
In the first 10 seconds of this trailer features guys on a nuclear submarine playing "La Bamba". even if it does costar Scott Speedman I don't think I can get over this. Okay, so this plot is overly complex. From what I understand the people on the submarine are under fire by their own country, they decide to take up residence on a small island and build defences. And, the world is at war? Byes oh byes, this is a lot to digest in three minutes.
The Neighbours
I could not find a trailer for this show on youtube, but from wikipedia I have found out that it is about a family who moves into a new community only to find out that their neighbours are aliens from another planet. They've been stuck here for over 10 years and are waiting for their 'call home'. Apparently the alien men can get pregnant and they can eat through their eyes. This was sounding very '3rd Rock From the Sun" until the last part there. I personally think this show doesn't stand a chance.
The Bottom Line
Nashville has the most chance of success, Last Resort may or may not be the new "Lost" and the other two don't stand a chance.

Billboard Music Awards - Predictions
Next up on the ever-going predictions train is the Billboard Music Awards. Prior to our predictions, we did a little bit of research into the awards. These are given out based on radio airplay, sales and downloads, meaning they are not voted for by either old men nor tweenage girls. Due to this, we have a lot of similarities since no one can deny that Adele had a huge year in 2011.

The 2012 Billboard Music Awards are airing Sunday, May 20th on ABC. Sadly, we will not be able to cover them 'live' as we will be on our annual May 24th weekend cabin excursion. But we will post a statistic update when we return.

Statistical Analysis
Overall:
Terri = 45.1% Correct Percentage Rate
Dana = 44.2% Correct Percentage Rate
So, as you can see we are hovering just under the 50% mark. Here is a more exact analysis of how it all plays out:
Basically, while I (Terri) have a little more consistency, Dana knows her stuff when it comes to the MTV Movie Awards and the Grammys. Our goal is that by the end of the summer we will both up our averages to hit the 50% mark.
There are five award shows (Billboard, Both MTV, Teen Choice, Much Music) that will we predict in order to do this. We will update at the end of summer with our progress!

NHL Playoff Predictions
It's getting close to my (Terri) favourite time of year again - the NHL playoffs! For fun, Dana and I thought we would both choose who we think is going to win. It's a bit of an 'experiment' if you will, as she has not been following hockey at all this year, and I have. So its a bit of a 'will knowledge or random guessing' work better? You may notice, I have not chosen the Boston Bruins to win this year. As much as I would LOVE this, I know a repeat is quite difficult and I don't really expect them to repeat this year.
The first round playoff match-ups are as follows:
Eastern Conference:
(1) New York Rangers vs. (8) Ottawa Senators
(2) Boston Bruins vs. (7) Washington Capitals
(3) Florida Panthers vs. (6) New Jersey Devils
(4) Pittsburgh Penguins vs. (5) Philadelphia Flyers
Western Conference:
(1) Vancouver Canucks vs. (8) Los Angeles Kings
(2) St. Louis Blues vs. (7) San Jose Sharks
(3) Phoenix Coyotes vs. (6) Chicago Blackhawks
(4) Nashville Predators vs. (5) Detroit Red Wings
*Note - the numbers before the team name indicate in which position they finished the season. I have left them in as it will be easy to tell which teams we think will go up against each other in subsequent rounds (the lowest and highest numbers always play off).

The Country Music Awards
So last year I recapped these awards and ended up getting all kinds of blog hits, so I thought I'd give it a go again. In preparation I re-read last year's blog. Again, I know next to nothing about country music, and don't particularly enjoy them, so expect lots of mockery ahead.
First up we have Carrie Underwood singing some off tune song. Seriously, sounds like she's having mega microphone problems. Also, she's one of few people I know here, and they put her up first? Well, guess she's happy that her Predator is going to make the playoffs this year, for the first time in a while (that sounds wrong, but I don't care).
Ah, these peeps don't like change much do they? It appears the awards are taking place at the MGM Grand in Vegas again and that the hosts are Reba and Blake-something or another. Last year I dubbed him "Man Host" so I may just stick with that again.
Who is this blonde person they keep flashing to in the audience? She does not looked impressed.
Kiss is there? In full makeup? WTF. Dudes, you're old.
The chorus of the next song goes "save water drink beer" and the singer is wearing skinny jeans that are just a bit too skinny, if you catch my drift.
Fun fact - you know how the outside of the MGM is a neon-y green? At night, if you don't fully close your curtains, you get a greenish laser beam of light that goes through your hotel room and makes it look like you're about to get attacked by aliens.
The Zack Brown Band is performing at the Mandalay Bay (I wonder if its the same place where I watched The Lion King and me and Shane proceeded to translate all the songs into really non-correct French?) Why does this dude look like he's Garge from 'round the bay?
The Band Perry - I think they sang a depressing song last year. Why does the lead singer have an essence of femullet happening?
Oh hi LL Cool J. You hosted the Grammy's and now you're at the Country Music Awards. Are you the new music ambassador for CBS or something?
Keith Urban, your 1996 lady hair is doing you no favours. You may want to invest in a haircut. OR is it that you just enjoy whipping your hair back and forth so much that you can't part with it? I'd be okay with that.
First award and they're over a half hour in. This is an improvement over the 45 minutes it took last year. The Eli Young Band just won - I'm sensing a theme with these band names (B'YES GET MORE CREATIVE!)
Man Host is singing. The audience likes Man Host. He has a double barbed wire tattoo on his arm, thus he is obviously badass.
Miranda Lambert just won something - there is a guy standing behind her that looks straight out of a Disney movie. Looks like he should be a plucky sidekick in Beauty and the Beast or something.
I think this kid must be the country Justin Bieber. He looks positively 12.
Oh, I just realized that Man Host is one of the judges on The Voice (another show that I don't watch).
The child yet man voiced Scotty McCreery just won Best New Artist. He won American Idol last year. To which, I think they should just change the name of that show to Country Idol, because, isn't that essentially what the show has become? Who was the last mainstream success, Kelly Clarkson? And I mean, she's gone pseudo-country these days.
This "Red Solo Cup" song is about the hickest thing I've ever witnessed. Also, my birthday was friday and I was using yellow solo cups - take that! Also, I think the singer has already partaken in a few drinks, he seems a little slurred.
Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw are singing together. My spidey senses are telling me this is perhaps a big deal?
Oh, Man Host and Miranda Lambert are married - are they the new Tim and Faith? She's singing a song. I don't particularly like it, but I think she's pretty.
Where's Reba? She seems to have gone MIA for a bit. Hopefully she's not like, drunk backstage or something. That would shatter so many Reba perceptions! Ah there she is, just popped back for an outfit change, it seems.
These Zack Brown peeps again - they sound very bluegrass. Next.
Bono is making a random guest appearance via satellite - his introducing a band. Oh Dierks Bentley. Samantha made fun of me last year because I thought they were a person and not a band!
There's some overly long, overly sentimental thing going on with some people getting married on stand. AND now there's military things happening. Is this thing over yet?
Here's Taylor Swift in her favorite non-colour. I would seriously love to see the girl in some yellow or green or something not white and/or neutral!
Oh the big one - Entertainer of the year - I'm betting that it's this Blake Shelton dude, he seems uber popular as of late. And nope, The Swift prevails. She's "shocked" as per usual.
Anddd I'm over and out. Should I have recapped the Juno's instead? I guess we'll never know. I hope you've enjoyed.
